KUALA LUMPUR, 3 August 2012: The Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) expects the attendance of 96,000 delegates to Sarawak by 2012, given the State’s success in bidding for 50 conventions last year. This will contribute up to RM59 million to the country’s economy.
Since its establishment by the Sarawak State Government in 2006, SCB has generated economic returns of RM202 million to the state, having successfully hosted 180 conventions at national and international levels.
SCB plays an active role as catalyst for tourism and business events. This, simultaneously, puts Malaysia on the international map as the Asian hub for the industry, which is also known as MICE (acronym for Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition).
In concordance with the important role it plays, SCB, recently, has also been awarded with the BrandLaureate Branding Award 2011-2012 for its efforts in promoting Malaysia, especially Sarawak, as a major destination for business events, tourism and investment.
Commenting on the award, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation (APBF), Dr. KK Johan said, \”SCB, through various initiatives, has been promoting Sarawak as a modern and prosperous state but, at the same time, still preserves its culture and heritage.\”
Meanwhile, SCB Chairman, Datuk Sri Dr. Mohd Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah said that they felt truly honoured by the recognition.
“This award is a stepping stone for us to continue promote Sarawak as a renowned business events destination at international level,” he said.
SCB Managing Director, Mike Cannon said that the recognition received through the award was a testament to the success of marketing and branding strategies planned by the bureau for the past 6 years.
State capital of Sarawak, Kuching has also been listed in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Asia Pacific & Middle East city ranking, when it shared the 42nd spot with Nara and Guangzhou, outperforming cities such as Adelaide and Canberra (Australia), and Bangalore (India).
Since 2006, SCB has won 9 international awards including the ICCA Best Marketing Award 2008, after competing with 80 business tourism destinations worldwide. It simultaneously became the first Asian destination to have ever entered the final round of the awards.
